PREMIER TEAMS – WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
By Ray Sandidge - CFU Director of Coaching
Our primary objective is to further develop the team and to prepare the players and the teams for play at and beyond the high school level. We provide a comprehensive training program that emphasizes not only the physical aspects of the game, but mental and emotional development as well. Individual player skills and techniques will be improved through focused training sessions and specialized clinics.
WHY IS PREMIER IMPORTANT? It brings together players who are more advanced physically and technically into a competitive training and playing environment. This environment will improve the players’ overall soccer abilities. This is similar to our educational system that provides opportunities for the advanced student, i.e., gifted math and science classes.
In addition to regular season, each team premier team will compete in four to six tournaments per year. CFU expects each premier team to compete at the highest level possible and encourages each team to participate in State Cup or Regional Cup Tournaments. Tournament competition dates and locations are usually selected by the coaching staff and will depend upon availability of proper competition, expenses involved, and outside scheduling conflicts.
Most premier teams will start formal training in August and complete their training with State Cup or Memorial Day weekend tournaments. Teams usually practice two to three times per week, depending on the age group and for an hour to two hours per session. Some teams will take scheduled breaks from training due to Christmas vacations, etc.
Regarding Coaching Staff and Philosophies, Central Florida United has a standing commitment to provide to the Premier Division teams the best coaching staff available. Most of our coaches have played and coached at the high school, college or professional level. Some teams will have coaches and trainers who will be compensated for their services, which will be defined in individual team budgets.
In some age groups, CFU will have more than one team and they will be defined as blue and white teams, with the blue teams being defined as our #1 team. In providing a second team, CFU is presenting 15 to 18 players with an opportunity to have “better coaching” and the availability against better competition (i.e., tournaments, premier leagues). Some clubs provide only one premier team per age group. However due to the size of our club and quality of players and coaches we are having two teams in some age groups.
