CFU Training Priorities U9 - U10

One of the biggest reasons that players quit playing altogether or are unable to participate in higher levels of the game is that they do not have the technical skills needed to play. CFU has outlined the following training priorities as the most important topics for each age group to teach their players.

This document is provided as a guideline for coaches of youth players 9-10 years of age. The intent is to:

  • Provide age-appropriate focus for training during the course of the season.
  • Provide benchmarks for what your players should achieve or have been exposed to by the end of the season.
  • Provide building blocks for development through the years.

The primary focus of this age group is to focus first on the individual and then on playing with a partner. With their improving coordination they will be better able to perform more difficult tasks in regards to their technique. Continue to work on all skills especially dribbling to beat an opponent. This is also the age where players are ready to work with a partner so passing should begin to be introduced. Don’t get carried away just focus on the player with the ball and their partner getting to a spot so that they can receive the ball.

Your success as a coach within CFU is not your won/loss record but if your players have fun, continue to play, and are being instructed in the clubs developmental scheme!!!
